The ultimate goal is zero roadway deaths.

The Road to Zero looks toward eliminating traffic fatalities by 2050, while 30 by 30 challenges us to make significant progress much sooner by reducing roadway deaths by 30% by 2030.

That near-term goal matters because every life saved along the way is a family spared an unimaginable loss. The road to zero is long, but the work to get there must happen today.

We all have a role to play, and together, we can continue moving toward safer roads for everyone.

August is National Traffic Awareness Month, a reminder that safer roads begin with the choices we make every day.

Staying alert, following traffic laws, giving others space, and keeping distractions out of the driver’s seat can help protect everyone sharing the road.

Whether you’re driving, walking, biking, or riding as a passenger, make safety the priority every time you travel.

Student filmmakers Annalyn D. and Sina B. of Byron Center High School, winners of 2nd Place in the 2026 Courageous Persuaders Passenger Empowerment category presented by the National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF), created this thoughtful public service announcement, "YOU`RE... THE DRIVER."

In the video, they highlight the important role passengers can play in keeping everyone safe. Sometimes, speaking up is all it takes to prevent a distraction before it becomes dangerous. By reminding drivers to stay focused and put distractions aside, passengers can help create a safer ride for everyone.

Congratulations to Annalyn D. and Sina B. on this well-deserved recognition and for sharing such an important message about looking out for one another on the road.

Summer doesn`t have to be the most dangerous time of year for teen drivers.

While the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is often called the "100 Deadliest Days" due to an increase in crashes involving young drivers, the choices families make every day can help change that.

Parents have more influence than they may realize. Modeling distraction-free driving, setting clear expectations, and continuing to practice safe driving habits with teens can make a lasting impact long after a driver`s license is earned.

Together, we can help make this the 100 Safest Days of Summer.

Find the full toolkit, conversation starters, and family resources at 100safestdaysofsummer.org.

There`s a quiet kind of overconfidence that creeps in behind the wheel. The drive you`ve made a hundred times. The road you know by heart. The feeling that you can handle one quick glance, one fast reply, one small moment of looking away.

But the road doesn`t care how many times you`ve driven it. It only responds to the choices you make right now. Stay present. Stay focused. Just drive.

One of the biggest challenges in addressing distracted driving is that we don`t always know when it`s a factor.

A driver may never admit they were looking at a phone. Witnesses may not see it. Crash reports may not capture it.

That means distracted driving is likely affecting far more crashes than the data can show.

The good news? Every time you get behind the wheel, you have the power to be part of the solution. Put the phone away and give driving your full attention.
