Mitchel Kiefer’s legacy lives on through action.

By addressing distracted driving head-on and calling it out for what it is, we work toward safer roads and fewer families experiencing the same loss.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to sit down with Administrator Jonathan Morrison and the team at NHTSA to discuss the urgent need for meaningful change around distracted driving.

Our Chairman, Steve Kiefer, alongside our close ally Jennifer Smith of StopDistractions.org, met with NHTSA leadership to talk about modernizing outdated approaches, prioritizing distraction as a critical safety issue, and working together to reduce crashes and save lives.

Thank you, Administrator Morrison, for your leadership, your willingness to listen, and your commitment to collaboration as we push for real progress nationwide.

We’re also thankful for our supporters who make this important work possible. Together, we can change how distraction is addressed in the U.S. and help keep more families safe.

💙 In Loving Memory of Lanie Kruszewski 💙

Lanie Kruszewski was just 24 years old when her life was taken by a distracted driver.

On July 29, 2012, Lanie was riding her bike home from work in Richmond. She was visible, well-lit, and doing everything right. But the driver who struck her never saw her, because he was looking at his phone instead of the road. He was texting.

Lanie was known for her contagious smile, her boundless energy, and her deep kindness. She had a gift for making people feel seen and cared for, whether that meant comforting classmates, surprising loved ones with thoughtful gestures, or opening her heart to those who needed it most. She was an athlete, a talented cook, and a coach who had recently discovered her passion for teaching and mentoring young people.

Her life ended because someone couldn’t wait to send a text.

📵 Lanie’s story is a powerful reminder: no message, notification, or call is worth a life. If you’re driving, put the phone away. Keep it out of reach. Whatever it is, it can wait.

We honor Lanie’s memory by choosing to drive with intention, attention, and care, for ourselves and for everyone sharing the road.

💙 Drive focused. Drive present. Just drive.

Being a good passenger doesn’t always mean talking more. Sometimes, the safest thing you can do is give the driver space to focus.

Passengers have the responsibility to help create a safe ride. That can mean pausing a conversation, lowering the volume, or noticing when a driver needs fewer distractions.

Be intentional on your next ride. Ask yourself: Am I helping the driver stay focused?

🗣️ Speak up. Stay aware. Save lives.

👶🚼 Not all passengers can speak up for their own safety.

Children, older adults, and vulnerable passengers depend on you to be their voice. That makes speaking up not just a right, but a responsibility.

Buckling up correctly, reducing distractions, and insisting on safe driving protects the people who can’t advocate for themselves.Be the voice for those who don’t have one. Safe passengers save lives.
