On March 27, we gathered at USA Hockey Arena to honor Mitchel on his birthday in a way that reflects his legacy… bringing awareness to the dangers of distracted driving and encouraging safer choices behind the wheel.

With support from the Detroit Police Explorers, fans had the opportunity to experience the Just Drive Simulator and see firsthand how distractions impact driving. It was incredible to see so many people engage, learn, and take that message with them.

A special moment of the night included Mitchel’s brother, Blake, and his fiancée, Erica, taking part in the ceremonial puck drop in Mitchel`s honor 💙

Together, we continue to turn remembrance into action.

Today is my brother Mitchel’s birthday.

So many people know his name because of the tragedy of how his story ended. But to me, that was never the story. He was one of the best parts of my life, and so much more than what happened to him on September 19th, 2016.

When I think about Mitchel, I think about the moments that made him who he was - the way he showed up for people, the energy he brought into a room, the way he made life feel exciting just by being in it. I think about the memories that are so ordinary, but mean everything to me now.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized how much of him I carry with me. In the way I think, the way I care about people, the way I move through the world - there are pieces of him everywhere in our family. His impact lives on in all of us who knew and loved him.

Today, I’m remembering my brother as the person who made my life better just by being in it. And I’ll keep carrying him with me in everything I do.
