I arrived home around 5 p.m. after an afternoon of errands with my daughter, Jewels. As we pulled into the driveway, I saw a police car parked out front. My first thought was, “Oh no… what did I do now?” When the officer asked if I was Paula Kiefer and then requested to speak inside, I knew something was terribly wrong.

He proceeded to deliver the devastating news about my son, Mitchel. At first, I didn’t believe him—I thought it had to be some awful mistake. Then he showed me a picture of Mitchel’s driver license. That’s when I collapsed, overcome with the painful truth that my sweet, intelligent, hilarious Mitchie was gone.

Every mother’s worst nightmare had just become my reality.

The rest of that night is a blur, but one moment stands out vividly. Jewels came to me wrapped in a blanket like a cape. It was the first time she had cried all day—she’d been in shock for hours. Through tears, she said, “Mom, I’m so scared you’re going to change.” She was afraid of losing the mom she had always known.

That moment pierced my heart. The only thing more painful than losing Mitchel was watching my other children endure such unbearable grief. I knew then that I had to stay strong—for them. I had to be the mother they needed, even in the face of unspeakable loss.

You can let a tragedy like this destroy you… or you can let it remind you to cherish every moment and draw strength from love. I’m proud that, as a family, we chose the latter. We leaned on each other—and on so many of you—to keep going.
